Pre season was a very successful time for us as we took part in the US1 preseason cup.

With Encouraging results and performances from all involved.

Pre season results

Papakura Res 1 : 9 FHM reserves

Takapuna 1st team 4 : 1 FHM reserves

Waitamata 1st team 4 : 3 FHM reserves

North shore 1st team 3 : 3 FHM reserves

Waitakere res 3 : 5 FHM reserves

These pre season frendlies allowed us to lock in our playing model and work on our system with and without the ball and although we still have work to do we have made large steps forward which will help us move on to the N.R.F.L. reserve season itself.

FHM Reserves V Manurewa  Reserves

First games of the season are always special for all concerned with nerves and apprehension running through the whole squad.

With the results during Preseason we had an air of confidence and having the fixture moved to Becroft Park for the first game of the season gave us a further lift.

Both teams set up with a 4.4.2.  But it was FHM who started the better team with sharp movement and possession football making Manurewa  work hard to gain the ball in the hot tempratures.

FHM looked the favourite to take the lead with Andrew Charles and Dale Pelser  forcing Manurewa's defence to scramble time and again forcing several corners.

From one of these set pieces Luke Leybourne  delivered a deep corner and Dean Tallentire rose above the mix and headed a powerful header in the net.

1:0  FHM

Two minutes later Dean Tallentire rose again from another corner putting the ball back into the mix and Jono Lewis had an easy tap in with Manurewa's defence  frozen to the spot.

2:0 FHM

FHM had Manurewa sewn up with their only option being the long ball to their small lone striker number 17

FHM had so much space in the middle of the park it was only a matter of time before FHM had a third.

This came from a quick move from deep in FHM's left side. Cailean Atkins jinking past two players and releasing Chris Groen leaving him one on one with a Manurewa defender who was no match for the speed and skill of the FHM winger .

The FHM winger slotted the ball to make  the score 3:0 at half time.

After the break Manurewa started the better team with FHM giving the ball away time after time.

Fitness and the heat taking a large part in the game gave Manurewa a small window of hope and this was further driven on when Manurewa managed to break FHM's off side call when the small striker ran on to a through ball and nicely finish to the keepers left.

3:1

This was the final score leaving players and the coaches thinking about the second half performance.

But with a first half full of positives and the three points in the bag smiles were the dress code of the day in the reserve camp.
